Motley Crue and The Scorpions
LIVE in Pine Knob, Michigan 7/13/99
By Thomas M. Bussler Jr.
On July 13th, 1999 I drove from Cheboygan, Michigan to Clarkston, Michigan near Detroit. About a 5-hour drive to the "Pine Knob Music Theater". From the moment I walked in the intensity was high. The crowd was ready to rock. I took my place by the stage and my camera was locked and loaded.

The first group up was "Flash Bastard", a Canadian group signed by Nikki Sixx to his label. They were a cross between the "Sex Pistols" and "Motley Crue". These guys really lit into it. Each and every member had a very diverse personality. They were really a treat to witness. The lead singer never stayed still and with his facial expressions and stage antics he was quite a show to watch. The guys really enjoyed themselves on stage and gave it one hundred percent. They're a little weird but they were a lot of fun.

It was now 8:30pm and I was totally psyched. One of my favorite bands was now taking the stage, "The Scorpions". So much history! These guys are no doubt one of the great legends of heavy metal music. I last saw them sixteen years ago at "Castle Farms Music Theater", in Charlevoix, Michigan. I was totally looking forward to seeing them again. I was not disappointed, from the very beginning they totally rocked. I tell you being right next to them as they performed, it was a though my spite had left my body and I was looking down from above. It was Godlike. They blistered through tracks like "No One Like You", "Rock You Like a Hurricane", and "Can't Live Without You". Their third song out was "Mysterious" from their new album "Eye to Eye". We were jamming. Klaus Meine sounded incredible. His voice was mind blowing. The guy is awesome. With Klaus belting out the tunes and Rudolf Schenker and Matthias Jabbs tearing up the guitars I was star struck. The energy was unbelievable.

There was also a kick-ass guy on bass I didn't know. He was filling in for Ralf Rieckerman. This kid was good; he smiled and had a blast for the whole hour and a half. The high point of the set was definitely when they lit into "The Zoo". The crowd went wild. It was quite a high. Rudy gave me a pick and Klaus had to have thrown out at least one hundred drumsticks. The guys put on a class act. If any of you people ever get a chance to see the "Scorpions" live in concert, go! Call in sick, quit your job, or steal a car. Do whatever it takes to see these guys. It will be worth it.

It was now 10:00pm and the crowd was going nuts because the fog machines were rolling and Motley Crue were taking the stage. I turned around and looked behind me and I saw 15,000 screaming, crazy, frenzied fans going totally bananas. The Crue was in the house!

From the moment they opened with "Shout at the Devil", these guys took us to a place that was magical. To see Vince, Nikki, and Mick on stage together again and having so much fun was definitely and early Christmas present. They rocked through the "Crue" Classics, one after another. When they played "Same Old Situation", I was surrounded by five undercover police officers. Motleys girls were coming out. Nikki then took the mike saying that they weren't supposed to have the girls do any degrading things on stage. He then said, "Fuck the police, just try and stop us." The girls then simulated giving head with a dildo and other crazy antics. The crowd went nuts and the show went on. Nikki was dressed out awesome and looked cool as hell. He and Vince seemed to have a great time on stage. They totally rocked. They played for an hour and a half and it was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

The Last time I saw the "Crue" was in 1991 at the Frankfurt Festhall in Frankfurt, Germany. It was on the "Dr. Feelgood" Tour and Tommy Lee had his revolving drum set. I missed seeing Tommy at the show, but the "Crue" will rock-on with or without him. Overall it was a night I'm never going to forget. I want to thank "Flash Bastard", "The Scorpions", and "Motley Crue" for putting on one Kick Ass Concert. You guys rocked!
